One of my favourite things is eating cakes, come on who doesn’t. So this is a nice one to get started. Lovely lemon cupcakes.

Ingredients:

250g (9oz) butter, softened

250g (9oz) sugar

Juice and zest of 1 lemon

4 eggs, beaten

300g (10oz) plain flour

3/4tsp baking powder

lemon curd

For the lemon butter icing:

150g (6oz) butter, softened

250g (9oz) icing sugar

Juice and zest of 1 lemon

2-3tsp of lemon curd

Method

Preheat oven to 180°C. Line a 12-hole cake tin with 12 paper muffin cases. I actually got about 15 cakes out of this mix.

Cream the butter in a large bowl. Add the sugar and lemon juice and zest. Beat until the mixture is light and fluffy. Gradually add the beaten eggs, then sift in the flour and baking powder and fold into the mixture.

Divide the mixture between the paper cases and bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 mins, until risen and golden. When cooked, the centre of each cake should be slightly springy to the touch. Remove the cakes from the tin and place on a wire rack to cool before icing them.

While slightly warn place a knife into the centre of each cake to cut a slot, into each slot squirt lemon curd using an icing bag.

To make the lemon butter icing, cream the butter in a bowl, add lemon juice, zest and lemon curd. Gradually add the icing sugar and beat into the butter, keep adding icing sugar until it reaches the desired consistency. Taste and if it doesn’t quite taste right keep adding ingredients until happy.

When the cupcakes are cool, pipe a generous coating of lemon butter icing onto each one.

Go make a cup of tea, and enjoy a cupcake.

Luckily I live near a main bus route so there is plenty of traffic to keep the snow down so I can easily get my car out of the street, and because of where I work I don’t need to contend with any difficult roads. But why is it that people can’t drive properly. Yes I agree that it’s a little slippy, but you will only lose traction if you accelerate too hard, break too hard or try to change direction too quickly. All people need to do is pay attention to the road ahead, drive at a sensible pace and leave a nice gap to the car ahead. Simple, nothing too it, now please will you stop driving like a dick.

This isn’t intended to be a comparison of the benefits of each system. The iPhone has some advantages, but compared to Android it also has some disadvantages. What I want to talk about here are my thoughts on the iPhone and the reason I’m choosing Android.

As some of you who know me might know I’m a bit of an Apple fanboy, I’ve been an apple user for quite some years now, and since the release of the iPhone I’ve always wanted one. The problem has been the cost, when it was first released I had a pay-as-you go phone, and was probably only spending £10 every 3 months, I was then issued a work phone so for the past few years haven’t been spending any money.

That changed recently when I decided I wanted a smart phone, this was caused mainly by getting a new work phone, which for want of a better word is crap. So I needed to make a decision, which way would I go. Should I get the iPhone I’ve always wanted or get the ever popular HTC Desire. After speaking to a few people at work who had switched from the iPhone to the Desire I decided that was the way to go. Unfortunately there seems to be a world shortage of them currently, resulting in it being over 6 weeks since I placed my order and still not having received the phone. It might not have been as bad if I’d ordered direct from t-mobile, but I ordered from another company who were doing a cash-back deal on the contract I signed up to. Hopefully I shall have it soon.

So what was the main reason for choosing Android after waiting for years to finally own an iPhone? Well it was the release of the iPad. There are a lot of people who don’t like the iPad, they have different reasons, for some its the OS, for others the cost, there are many more thoughts both good and bad, but to me its a very desirable device. If I want to use a computer I will use my iMac or perhaps my Win 7 laptop, I won’t use a netbook. I don’t want a nearly computer, a slow computer with a small screen – what’s the point, yes it might be light, and maybe I could use it to surf the web on a daily commute, but I won’t. To me the price of netbooks don’t save them, it’s just money that could have been spent on a proper laptop. Many people will disagree, but I don’t care.

There are people who don’t like the iPad, because they equate it to an expensive netbook, and again, I say this is wrong. This isn’t a computer, it doesn’t have a full blown version of OS X, this is one of the reasons that I think windows based tablets didn’t catch on in the past, and won’t work in the future. An Android based one might have better luck however.

To me the iPad is an entertainment device, it can be used for almost anything imaginable. Yes I know it won’t make phone calls like the iPhone and doesn’t currently have a camera, but have you seen the size of it why would it need to make phone calls. It’s perfect for surfing the web without being stuck at a desk in front of a computer (so good for commuters), who cares if it doesn’t have Flash, HTML5 should make that argument irrelevant. I’m interested in its ability to be used as an ebook reader, yes I know its not e-paper, but its got a high definition colour screen which can be used to include music, video, animation, 3D renderings and many more things to create awesome interactive books – who wouldn’t want that.

What about using it in the living room to control a media centre PC. It could be easily used to run a media app which links to the IMDB, the user could search for a film and then book seats at a local cinema. If the film is no longer showing at the cinema then it could automatically be added to their LOVEFiLM (Netflix for US readers) queue and streamed direct to their TV. The iPad itself could be used as a touch screen controller for for iTunes, Sky set top boxes or any other digital media device in the house. With the correct interfaces it could be used to control everything in the house, from the burglar alarm, lights and curtains.

There are thousands of apps and games being written for the iPad which help to embed it into every area of our lives. To me the iPad isn’t a netbook, its a touch screen interface that can be used for almost anything. If you want to used it in a particular way and an app doesn’t currently exist, then you can write your own app and might be able to make a few quid in the process.

So finally after years of waiting to buy an iPhone, I’m not, I’m getting a HTC Desire. It can meet all of my smart phone needs for a cheaper cost, and with the money saved I can buy an iPad which will meet all of the interactive touch screen computing needs which can’t be met by an iMac or a laptop.

So it’s been quite a while since I last wrote here. I’m not going to lie to you, I’m full of ideas (not necessarily good though), but am not actually that keen to do anything about them. I like the idea of having a blog, somewhere deep inside I thinks it’s cool that I might actually write something that somebody else might find interesting. The problem with such a notion is that you actually have to come up with regular content and write it in an engaging style, something which I can’t bring myself to do. Another problem is that to have a really popular blog it needs some kind of theme. It isn’t good enough to just keep pushing out content, there needs to be something that holds it all together, a coherent theme that runs through all the entries.

So this isn’t the beginning of some new period of active blogging, this is a test of Windows Live Writer (as the title might suggest). I’ve usually made do with the WordPress web interface which usually meets my needs, but figured that since I’m wanting an excuse to use my new laptop more often, then I might as well give Live Writer a go. It seems strange that Microsoft would release an application which can be used to push content straight to WordPress blogs, but they have, and it seems quite satisfactory. To some extent I can see it being an advantage over the web interface. Using Live Writer its easier to create posts in offline mode which will lead to less distractions and more time to focus on the business at hand, the business of writing.

Since I’m not very good a reviews I’m not going to write one so I’m going to begin wrapping this up. The only problem I’ve discovered so far as that I keep hitting the Caps Lock key on my keyboard every time I try to hit the A key which has resulted in some interesting spelling. So to sum up, the software seems fine, the keyboard on my laptop is taking a bit of getting used to.

Well I’ve typed 390 words now and I think that’s more than enough. So I’ll probably be writing again sometime next year, so have a good Christmas and remember, don’t be a dick.

So over a year ago I decided that my blog was getting a bit full of old posts and I wanted a clean slate. I thought that some of my posts were a but crappy and I figured that I could start again writing high quality posts, the problem is that I’ve barely written anything since. I’ve therefore decided to import my old posts back into this blog. I’ve not made any changes, they are just as they were originally published, complete with suspect spellings and grammar.

I just logged in today so that I could test out some new themes and upgrade my WordPress install so that my sites all nice and secure so those pesky hackers can’t make use of any unpatched exploits. WordPress is up to version 2.7 now, and its really quite different since 2.6 don’t you know.

Anyway as the title says I just wanted to wish you all a very Merry Cristmas, I might start posting a little more regular next year, but then again maybe I wont.
