In the build up to the summers festivals yesterday we headed off to Newcastle for the Orange Freevolution festival, it was great. While there we notched up seven bands although only five counted to the MySpace gig total (click for more info). Particular highlights have got to be The Sunshine Underground for just being good using other peoples equipment, The Proclaimers for having great songs and getting everyone in a good mood, Graham Coxon for nice glasses and Hard-Fi who made great headliners (sorry Phil your just wrong).
We were quite lucky because the weather was supposed to be terrible, and yes on the way there was the kind of hail stone shower that made me think windows may be broken. But overall the weather was good. With just two small showers that weren’t really enough to cause too much damage. I was also rather impressed at how easy it was to get access to the stages, I was imaging that there would be masses and masses of crowds, and while there was quite a few people we were easily able to get within about 20m of the stage for a great view.
While the weather may not have rained on us it did get cold as the evening wore on. So it is at this point that I must give thanks to Simon who loaned his coat to Lisa (two) of the MySpace gig challenge Leeds posse. Simon loaned her his coat as he had to leave early before the roads were closed, Phil and I were given the task of retrieving said coat, of course we forgot so its currently having a little holiday in Leeds. On the subject of clothes heres a nice photo of me in the smallest jumper ever!
So far the MySpace challenge is going quite well, since its been just over 2 months now and we’ve seen 45 bands, but that will be easily over 50 once we go out again on Friday to FACT, to see The Cooper Temple Clause on Saturday, and for some more band related fun in Leeds on Monday. Its all becoming a bit to easy at the moment although the World Cup is sure to through a spanner in the works. Recently there has been some talk of more long haul trips to Manchester, Liverpool and London.
