Its a matter of style

So I’m discontinuing the use of my feedburner service. It was good for the few days it was in use as some of the stats it gives you are quite nice, but it did introduce a delay into the issuing of my feeds and since it didn’t do anything that I couldn’t do myself figured that I’d just have to get on and write some XSL.

So that’s what I did, when I say that I wrote my own it may be a slight exaggeration, it was more a case of customising some files that I borrowed form elsewhere to suit my needs. But the results are the same, no longer are you greeted with plain XML data, for now it has been styled into a nice human readable format by my custom built template. I may make some changes to the overall style at some point, but for the time being it will suffice.

The day after

Today I feel awful. It has to be said that its completely my own fault, well mine and the Irish. After leaving work I decided that there would be no need to eat as I would be having a curry later, so dashed home grabbed a quick bath and set off into town.

At half past seven I was starting my first pint of Guinness and it was good. I won’t bore you with the details (besides if your that interested then you should have been there!) After meeting in the Pennyweight we visited a few more pubs and I drank a few more Guinness’s (six) and some whiskey (three), we then went for an Indian (which I’m still suffering from – ring sting I believe Simon called it).

Poor MSN

Its really rather strange, if you get yourself along to http://www.msn.com and do a search for “andy bell” you will find that this very site comes top of the list. I’m even higher up that the real Andy Bell from Erasure. MSNs search algorithm must be rather poor if I end up at the top of the list. If by the time you read this they’ve updated their database and moved me down the search order here’s a photo of the current state of play.

MSN Search - Top of the list

RSS Changes

I’ve received comments suggesting that my RSS feeds weren’t working. They definitely were if using a browser with full RSS support or a dedicated RSS reader. Browsers such as IE 6 and Firefox don’t seem to do a very good job of RSS support, Firefox tries its hardest with its use of Live Bookmarks, but frankly its still rubbish. I am however pleased with the support that Internet Explorer 7 seems to have for RSS feeds (although Safari has had this same support for a while now), well done Microsoft (I never thought I’d say that).

Anyway as you can see at the bottom of the page you will see links for Entries RSS and Comments RSS, up until recently you would have received a page of XML which looks like this. While this is valid XML, its not very user friendly as there is no matching XSL file to style the output. At some point when I’ve got some time I will write an XSL file, but for the meantime I’m going to use Feedburner to process my RSS feeds. You will still be able to view the feeds as normal in your usual feedreader, but now if you choose to click the links in your browser you will get nice user friendly output.

Eddie is back

I’ve just bought myself and Stephen tickets to Iron Maidens upcoming gig at the Metro Radio Arena on Sunday 17th December 2006 which is part of their winter World tour. I’ve being a big fan of Iron Maiden since I was at school but have never had a chance to see them. So today when I got an e-mail inviting me to buy tickets it was a chance I couldn’t miss. My confirmation e-mail has just arrived, so its all sorted. Shutty just needs to get saving now so he can actaully pay me back!

If your a fan and want tickets then they go on general sale tomorrow and can be purchased from Ticketmaster.

Old before my time

Its official I’m getting old, this is a fact which has not gone unnoticed, for I while now I’ve not been repulsed by the thought of brussels sprouts, in fact I now quite look forward to them with my Christmas lunch. I was trying to brush this under the carpet, I’m only 26 its not like I’m past it yet. But sadly today I realise that perhaps I am. I’ve spent the evening at a meeting for the Friday nights work bowls league, it wasn’t exactly the most fun I’ve ever had but some of arguments were great. If that wasn’t bad enough upon returning home all I wanted was a hot bath, my book (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) and a nice cup of tea. This is just wrong, its wrong in so many ways. I should want beer and pizza, but not so. It seems that whatever the problem it can now be solved with a cup of tea. In the past weeks there hasn’t been a thing that a cup of tea hasn’t been able to resolve.

The great MySpace gig challenge

So you may or may not have heard a great deal about MySpace in the news. MySpace is simplicity itself – a site that enables anyone to build their own homepage for free, listing their likes, dislikes, favourite bands, top books, best movies, general interests, relationship status etc, and then hook-up with other like-minded folk.

Myself and a few of my mates are all members and we’ve come up with the MySpace gig challenge, which basically involves finding cool unknown bands and driving to random pubs and various locations around the country and going to see them. The first potential gig is that of operationsix in Huddersfield. I’m not sure how far we will get with the challenge, or whether it will become another of those good idea at the time things that never actually take off. A much closer event is the new indie/electronic/alternative/rock night based every fortnight on a THURSDAY @ ATLANTIC in Darlington, but I doubt that we’ll make it this week as I have big plans for Friday.

I know the weather isn’t that great at the moment, but I do believe that life is looking up. The weather IS going to get better so I can put my car away for the summer (long live Kawasaki), and now I have a stupid boy project to fill the summer months, I recon that I could make a graph out of this in a Dave Gorman type styleeee.

The last supper

Don’t panic I didn’t mean it in a religious sense; I’m not going to be getting myself crucified tomorrow. At least I hope not. Yesterday was my last day of slobbing about, because today I returned to the gym after a period of 17 days without going. With only 69 days until the Great Manchester Run I felt that it was important that I got back to it as soon as I felt physically possible and today was that day.

I was most surprised that after 17 days of doing nothing I still feel pretty fit. In fact I still weigh the same now as I did 17 days ago, which is strange when I think about how much junk food I’ve ate. It also backs up my philosophy which states that no matter how much I eat I won’t actually weigh anymore. This sadly also means that I can’t get below my average weight which is twelve and a half stone, no matter how hard I try or how skinny I get.
